Since moving to Japan three years ago to manage
a software company, I had not really improved my Japanese very much although I had taken two years as a university
student in the US and spent a year studying abroad at Tsukuba University.
Last year, I decided it was time to improve my business Japanese as well
as my overall Japanese reading comprehension so I signed up for lessons
with Akiko.
When I first starting taking weekly lessons with Akiko, I had a lot of
difficulty reading the Nikkei Newspaper but now only 6 months later I feel comfortable skimming through Japanese Nikkei articles.
In addition to reading finance/business content, we have been working on grammar in preparation for the Level 1 Japanese Proficiency Exam and deepening my knowledge of Kanji.
She has been a great teacher and designed our curriculum to help me
achieve my goals.
If you are interested in improving your Japanese, I highly recommend Akiko-sensei!

I started studying with Akiko in September of 2003 after having already passed the second level of the national Japanese proficiency exam.
As an English teacher, I didn't have many opportunities to speak Japanese
on a daily basis, so I was less interested in having a formal teacher as
I was a regular conversation partner.
At the same time, I was also preparing for the first level of the proficiency
exam and doing coursework for an MA in Japanese, so I would often ask her
fairly detailed questions about grammar, kanji, etc.
Akiko has been wonderful both as a conversation partner and as a teacher.
She does an excellent job of drawing out conversation without dominating
it, something many of us English teachers could learn from.
I can honestly say that our hour-long lessons always seem to end too early, a sure sign of engaging conversation.
Whenever I ask a difficult question or identify a weak point that I want
to work on (e.g. name kanji, the various uses of kakeru, obscure keigo,
etc.), Akiko always comes prepared with detailed written answers or worksheets
the next lesson.
She even helped me once with the research for a paper I was writing (in English) about Japanese newspapers.
I'll leave Tokyo in March, 2004, but I'll be very sad to give up my lessons
with Akiko.

We highly recommend Akiko!
She is an excellent teacher for both a beginner starting with the
basics of Japanese and for someone who has spoken Japanese for
many years but wants to improve his reading skills.
Not only is she very competent as an instructor, she is also a very
nice person to get to know.

Last year I sat the 3rd level
Japanese Proficiency test.
I studied very hard for about 7 months before the test.
I had to study about 300 kanji, about 1500 words, Japanese grammar and
listening.
I knew my weak points were kanji and vocabulary so I studied that the most.
I thought my listening skill was my strong point so I didnft study that
too much.
I started taking Japanese lessons with Akiko from Golden Week 2003. The
proficiency test was held in December.
I took a lesson once a week until November, at which time I increased it
to twice a week.
I was very worried before the test.
I thought I would fail.
I think Akiko thought so too.
But she always told me she believed I could succeed.
Yesterday I got the results.
I passed.
I was very surprised but of course very
happy.
When I told Akiko she was very happy too.
I think she was happier than me.
I am now studying for 2 level. I will do my best.
